l&q

As some of you know, I launched my photography business in May of 2008. Before then, I always looked at what I did as a hobby… or an obsession

I owe a lot to my bestest friend, lindsey, for getting me started. She always admired the photos that I would take of my son and wanted me to take some of her and her daughter.  Little did I know how much that would help me. With just a white piece of fleece as a background, natural light and the fairly inexpensive camera that I had, I snapped away. Those photos were soon sent to her friends and family, who then asked me if I would be willing to take photos of their children!

So Lindsey, I owe so much to you. I thank you for pushing me so hard to get a website and start taking strangers as clients. I thank you for believing in me and for opening my eyes. I thank you for always being willing to be my model when I have  a crazy idea. I don’t think I would be as successful and confident right now if it weren’t for all those times you pushed me.

With the help of my husband and my best friend believing in me and seeing how much passion I truly have for this, my dream is now a reality. I love and thank both of you!!

Ok, enough of that and on to the latest photo shoot that I did of my best friend and her daughter

I found this field full of wild flowers and new that adding quinn and lindsey to the mix would make some pretty breath-taking photos.

The white dress below is close to 100 years old! – thanks grandma for giving it to me!

And how about a couple from my first EVER photo shoot…

I just lurk.

Dear Kids:

I love being with you.  I wish I were the clever one and could regale you with my fresh ideas.  I yearn to have the quick repartee and the “with-it” knowledge of what is happening now.  Instead, I find myself wordless and watching.

When did this happen to me; that I lost touch with the top ten books, the current political jokes and the latest You Tube wonders?  Was it somewhere around the time that I left the short shorts and the tank tops behind?  Did I begin seeing myself as “past the age?  Maybe it was when I began admiring you more than being you.  Or is it just that I move in different (not smaller, I hope) circles?

When does the inevitable shift occur?  I’ve seen it in many older people but the role model was very strong from my parents.  My poor mother went so far off into her own head that she seemed to miss the life she lived as she took up permanent residence there.   Dad was immersed in his thoughts and readings.   He often talked without pauses about subjects dear only to his own heart.  Am I there?

My life is interesting to me but its focus has changed through the years.  Sometimes I am so internal that I question how I operate in your world.  Casual conversation triggers thoughts of life issues instead of current events.  My thoughts can run so far from your original subject that my comments would be inappropriate. If I did speak it might be the classic unintentional non sequitur.   And maybe I’ve gotten too serious for the fun talk.  The books I read are purely frivolous or so spiritual, educational or helpful that discussion of them causes you to run for cover.  Intensity…that’s the buzz kill!

So I google “LOL” and voraciously read your Facebook posts.  I watch “The Daily Show”.  I can speak “Hannah Montana” and “American Idol”.  I try to remember the names of the sports heroes and the latest “American Model”.  My knowledge is shallow, though.  It’s hard to have an in-depth conversation on most of these subjects.

But I am here with you.  I see, hear, and feel the life of my family buzzing about me.  I may not be current with the world but I am current with your lives.  If I don’t have a lot to say, I try to smile and laugh in the right places.

I lurk, I listen, I adore.

தற்சமயம் அமெரிக்காவில் புகழ்பெற்ற Phillip Garrido குறித்த செய்தி: Questions arise over how kidnapper went undetected – Yahoo! News: “For 18 years, Phillip Garrido managed to elude detection as he pulled off what authorities are calling an unfathomable crime, kidnapping and raping 11-year-old Jaycee Dugard, keeping her as his secret captive for nearly two decades and fathering two of her children.”

Ascent to Wansfell Pike

Special Moments

It was a special moment when as a family we reached the summit of Wansfell Pike.

You see, after not getting to the peak of Helvellyn (not that we expected to climb the highest mountain in the Lake District on our second ever venture!) we were adamant that we’d clear one summit before returning home to London.

So with mission in mind we were off! Walking boots, rucksacks, cagoules and water flasks at the ready, we began our ascent ~ a Ferguson adventure.

Located north east of Windemere, Wansfell Pike was recommended by the owner of the property where we stayed in Ambleside. Due to poor weather, the day before we settled for a walk at the Waterfalls; a much shorter walk, but putting safety first, a good call.

Having trodden the idealic terrains of Cumbria for the first time, climbing Wansfell Pike was a good challenge for the Fergusons; a challenge we relished. Scrambling over the last peak was great fun, but the sense of euphoria when we stood together at the mountain summit was fantastic. We did it!

Looking south across Lake Windemere and north towards the Rydal and Grassmere (lakes we’d driven along during our stay) brought about a remarkable feeling of achievement and gratitude.

‘It’s cold up here.’

Ironically, having accomplished our goal, we were’nt to stay for too long, as it was notably colder than we’d have anticipated and extremely windy. In an era of democracy I was outvoted when I balloted between staying longer or starting our descent!

Special Moments

Although pleased to be back home in sunny South London (me especially after getting numb bum from the return journey), there’s something wonderful about the memories shared during our week in Cumbria. My hope is that these memories (with the help of pictures on our screen saver) will be the topic of discussion for many years to come.

We loved it in the Lake District and are truly grateful to our friend for giving us the opportunity to see such wonders. Despite lots of walking it was restful. For me ‘invigorating’, for my Angel ‘renewing.’

In it all I found myself reminded daily of the awesomeness of God, the craftsman, creator and sustainer of all things (Colossians 1:16-17).

The One

I hardly can tolerate little children. Their endless gibberish and immature sense of humor annoy me endlessly. I only like them if I am related to them or otherwise emotionally connected.

However, the other day at Target I encountered on little girl who I genuinely believe is a genius. If there is anyone who can or could concoct a zombie vaccine, this bitch is she.

I don't know why this movie is so despised.

While my mother was arguing with the cashier – who was a total whore by the way because my mom was completely right – about ten dollars that should have been deducted from the cost of the TV she so graciously bought me for college I enjoyed a mediocre California salad from the Target food bar thing. Next to me a woman pulled up with a little girl in tow, promising her excited daughter ice cream. The woman ordered one small vanilla ice cream for her daughter, to which the little girl responded, “what!? only a small!?” The mother, in an attempt to quiet her daughter told her that if this time she finishes the small, next time she’ll receive a medium. Nopw this is wear the girls’ genius comes into play. Mind you this small lady was between three and five years old.  I think this is pretty keen reasoning for a child of that age; to her mother’s proposition she responded with another: “if I finish the medium, next time, can I get a big?”

First of all adorable.

Secondly, genius.

Family law is unfair you say?

I read with interest the story of Alison Shaw in today’s issue of The Star.  After joking in an email that her marital problems could be solved with a gun, Ms Shaw was arrested, jailed overnight, forced out of her home, and ordered to stay away from her three children.

The cries of “overreaction” regarding this case can be heard for miles.  I say: it’s about bloody time.  If more women had to experience the judicial atrocities that men have been subjected to for decades, then maybe…just maybe…our horribly gender-biased family courts would finally be overhauled.

In today’s world of divorce and blended families, fathers have been reduced to ATM Status in the lives of their children.  They are villified and portrayed as unfit parents, and even as abusers and sex offenders “waiting to happen”.  They have no recourse against ex-wives who actively attempt to alienate them from their children (known as Malicious Mother Syndrome).  They often have to deal with slander and false accusations, which, even if disproved, will usually follow them for years.  While they have the option of civil court as recourse to the latter two issues, they are often emotionally and financially bankrupted by the divorce and child support proceedings, making a civil suit virtually impossible to pursue.

Going back to Ms Shaw’s case: while it is refreshing to see the shoe on the other foot for once, she still got off lightly.  She was released on bail and has since been granted 50/50 access to her children.  Had it been a man who had joked about shooting his wife, bail would have been set significantly higher.  As for 50/50 access to the children – don’t make me laugh.  He would be lucky to see them at all, let alone have any shared access rights.

Men’s rights groups have been screaming about the inequalities and bias in our family courts for years without success.  Why does it take a woman being subjected to the same laws for the courts to finally realize that something needs to change?

The militant feminist groups who preach “equality”, (but who are truly seeking “superiority”) have, unfortunately, succeeded in shaping our family court laws.  They have succeeded in emasculating men, and, as a result, society as a whole.  The venom and hatred these groups direct towards honest men under the guise of “equality” and “human rights” is disgusting.  The actions of these groups, and of women who think nothing of manipulating the courts in order to destroy their ex-husbands, make me ashamed to share their gender.

I hope to see many, many more stories like Ms Shaw’s in the future.  Because the more women who are “victimized” by these laws, the sooner they will change.  I don’t know about you, but I have no desire to live in a world where men are nothing more than sperm donors and bank accounts.

How to steal your girlfriend's password to community sites (guide)

For all those people who want to find out if your partner is cheating or the password to your partner’s facebook/myspace/e-mail/msn and other. Or if you are a parent worrying about what your kid might be doing at the computer behind closed doors.

Business going bad? Time to check up on your employees surfing habits. But how to do this, without getting caught trying to get some information?

Keep reading, I have the solution for all of you people.

I chose to introduce you to a keylogging/surveillance program after finally finding the tool that will give myself some answers to questions regarding my own relationship. I have searched for quite a long time and thought that there just aren’t any effective programs out there yet. But I found out that there is, it’s called All In One Keylogger, I gave it a try and I was honestly said frightened about the information it is able to collect, it will give you the answers to all your questions and suspiciousness.

The program fits for:

a) People in a relationship

b) Business administration, finding out what your employees do when they “work”

c) Parents who want to keep track of their kids.

From their homepage you can read about the futures of All In One Keylogger, as I find it a bit pointless to copy paste whole production info page. Don’t be scared off by the word keylogger, YOU are the master of the program, only you will ever have control of the logs, pictures and audio that it monitors. Below is a lot of information about the features and what the program does, I recommend to read it in order to get a idea about the program.

Product Website:

http://www.plimus.com/jsp/redirect.jsp?contractId=1682768&referrer=Niar

I chose to speak more about my personal experiences of the program instead of talking about all the futures, those can all be found by following the link above to the product site.

What does All In One Keylogger do?

All In One Keylogger logs all keystrokes and passwords that have been typed into crypted files on your computer, it tracks all windows and applications that have been launched, clipboard, chat conversations (sent and received), all Web sites that have been visited, e-mails sent and received.

You can set it to take screen snapshots every few seconds or on each mouse click, just like a surveillance camera. It can also record Microphone sounds and restrict the access to specified Web sites and applications if wanted. It can even be set up to send these logs to your e-mail or FTP for tracking when you are away!

Personally I hate it the times I get the feeling in my stomach that something might be going on when I’m away from my partner, this is the solution to get rid of the paranoia, or to get proof for your suspicions. It snaps up all usernames and passwords into the very easily readable log viewer supported in the All In One Keylogger program. And maybe even more importantly you can set it up to take screen snapshots every few seconds and view the pictures later. I chose to divide the potential usage areas into different categories, you might wonder what the All In One Keylogger could be good for, I’ll tell you.

Relationship:

In the survey that took place in United States in the year of 2005 which includes married couples only, 56% of the participants of the survey said that during their marriage they had at least one sexual encounter with a person that is not their spouse. Are you living in a relationship and suspect that your partner is cheating on you, or doing other stuff he/she shouldn’t be doing on your/her computer (flirting harshly on community sites, MSN messenger contacts, webcam usage, microphone usage or visiting sites that are uncomfortable in a relationship.. the list goes on.

This is where All In One Keylogger can be there to save you from wasting time on your relationship, you wonder what your partner does when he/she is on the computer and you are away or working night shift. Well there is no reason to keep wondering and being paranoid about what she might be doing, you can find it out directly by downloading the trial version straight away (it is amazingly easy to set up, and the best part is that it is totally undetectable/invisible in windows, so no one can find out it’s installed and running.. read more on product site for more detailed info).

It basically records all keystrokes, and shows in which program the text has been typed in, stores visited sites and you can set it up to take a picture of the screen for example every 10 seconds!

Employers:

In the survey that took place in Britain in the year 2006, 87% of the employees participating in the survey said that they surf on the internet during their work at least once a week. 73% of them said that they surf at least once a day. 23% of them said that they dedicate more time to surfing on the internet than to their work! In the additional survey that took place in the same year answered 36% of the employers, participants of the survey mentioned that they are afraid that secrets of the company will be sent to their competitors from the company computers by their employees. 4% announced that they fell victim to the theft of company secrets by their workers from the company computers.

Are you running a small sized company, and wonder why you aren’t getting as much work done as you should be getting. Well the solution is here, with All In One Keylogger you can make sure who are actually working and who are not. The result can be scary, you might find out that the employee is actually playing online poker half day or such, no wonder that the results aren’t so promising. There are a lot of people who don’t care as long as their getting paid, so they will just entertain themselves in some way instead of actually working.

Parents:

Today, almost every child has access to internet. This comes thanks to the advance in technology, but has also risks involved. Did you know that: The average age when the children encounter pornography in the internet is 11? The age of the largest pornography consumer group in the internet is between 12 to 17? 85% of children between the ages 6-16 encountered pornographic content intentionally or unintentionally (most of them while preparing their homework). 25% of children between ages 9-17 will freely disclose their home address in the internet? 60% of children who committed suicide, declared their intentions online directly or indirectly? One in five children who use the computer chat rooms has been approached over the internet by pedophiles? Only 25% of youth who received sexual solicitation told a parent.

The children today are very sophisticated and most of us parents don’t have the knowledge to know what they are doing behind their closed doors in front of the computer. Are they browsing to inappropriate websites, are they downloading illegal content using P2P programs that will in the future result in lawsuits of thousands of dollars? What personal information they disclose about themselves, are they talking to adults, or maybe they meet them?

All In One Keylogger has many features:

No activity on your computer will be able to evade this high quality Keylogger. Does your kid make secret chat conversations with adult strangers? Maybe even with a pedophile that searches for his next victim? Does he surf to pornographic sites? Maybe he even exposes his personal details where he is not supposed to? Does he use P2P programs, sharing copyrighted materials which could constitute a pretext to a lawsuit of tens thousands of dollars? Have you ever wondered why does your husband “work” on his computer so late at the night? Does he have a secret online lover?Have you ever wondered who is your wife’s “partner” she talks with all the time? Do your employees surf on the internet instead of doing their work which you pay them for? Do they sell company secretes to your competitors? A high quality Keylogger should give you the answers to all these questions. No activity will be able to evade from it. No undesirable activity will be able to evade from you! As said, a high quality Keylogger is an “All In One Keylogger”, so just press this link to download “All In One Keylogger”:

Old enough to ...

Been pondering this – 18 year olds are not old enough to handle drinking and smoking, but they can vote in the leader of our country – 16 year olds are not old enough to vote in the leader of our country but they are old enough to be responsible with a… vehicle, one of the top causes of deaths – 14 year old are not old enough to drive a vehicle but they are old enough to be entrusted with care of small children. hmmm

Tooth Fairy Complaints

I have a complaint.

Apparently, there are many tooth fairies and the one assigned to our house is cheap.  She only leaves a toonie for each tooth.   (That’s a $2 coin for you non-Canadians.)

Personally, I don’t think that she’s cheap at all but the children are complaining.  I try to tell them how lucky they are because I only received a quarter for each tooth.  (That’s a 25 cent coin for you Canadians.)  They’re not buying it.

A friend who was visiting yesterday bragged that she receives six dollar coins AND chocolate coins.  Other friends receive Webkinz.  A Webkinz for the remains of a tooth?  That’s one generous tooth fairy!

Is there somewhere that I can file a formal complaint with the tooth fairies?  Do they have a professional association?  Maybe I could arrange for a more generous fairy to take over our house.  Even better, I’d like to for all of the tooth fairies to follow a maximum benefit guideline.  A cheap one.

School Daze

It’s that wonderful sad busy time of year again, when the carefree days of summer make way for back-to-school structure and purpose.  Some of you may be personally experiencing this phenomenon with your own children for the very first time.  You may be feeling lost or lonely, scared or overwhelmed about your baby leaving the nest and starting pre-school or Kindergarten.  You may be shell-shocked at the expense of new school clothes and supplies, and worn out from all the preparation.  Well, here’s some advice.  Just sit back for a moment with a cup of coffee, enjoy the temporary silence, and let me gently burst your bubble.  This is as easy as it’s ever gonna get.  It’s all downhill from here.

First of all, we’ll talk about the expense.  Yes, Jr. will need new clothes and glue sticks, pencils and a backpack.  But you can probably still pick these out yourself.  Your kids are probably still excited at the prospect of getting anything new, and they will not roll their eyes at everything you show them.  No doubt, unless you’ve hopelessly spoiled them already, you can still buy nice bargain items at your local K-Mart, Wal-Mart or Target.  Pretty soon, the little darlings will be tainted by their peers, convinvced that it’s not what they wear, but how much it costs, that will make them one of the cool kids.  You’ll have to buy backpacks as pricey as luggage with lifetime guarantees, but you will still need to replace them every year because “everyone will remember that was the one they had last year.”  You will have to spend a mortgage payment on each one of them for jeans with pre-ripped holes, shoes they need to scuff up before they wear them, and shirts valued only for the brand name written on them.  Trust me, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

You may be busier than usual with some open houses and getting the kiddies off to school on time.  But very soon, you will be sucked into a vortex of never-ending activity.  Your kids will be persuaded to join things, like Scouts and Little League.  They have people that come into the schools and convince your kids they’re not busy enough with just homework and video games.  You’ll have to go to meetings.  Then the real fun starts.  You may yourself get sucked into a variety of committees and positions (some familiar examples: coach, asst. coach, scout leader, homeroom mother, party helper, treasurer, secretary, etc.) by other glassy-eyed eager parents looking for a sucker reasonably responsible person to “get involved” with the kids.  You will naively believe them when they say it will take no more than about an hour a week and they just need help for this year.  Five years later, you will be running from meeting to meeting, planning events and hauling your kids around to umpteen activities, desperately seeking for someone as naive happy to get involved as you were to take over your duties.

By high school, you may be able to extricate yourself from the PTA meetings and dance monitor duties.  But then your kids will have found new activities.  You won’t be required to actually hang around with your kids.  In fact, they’ll probably pretend they don’t even know you.  You just have to discreetly get them there and quietly drop them off and pick them up.  Your summer will suddenly be shortened by several weeks by band and/or sports camps.  You will probably have to get up at the crack of dawn to transport your little darlings to their various destinations.  Then you’ll have to pick them up at the most inconvenient times, especially if you work at a normal type of job.  Football camp was nice because they throw a lot more money at the football program, so they kept your kid all day and actually fed them.  This was great for us parents smart enough not to volunteer to be there providing the food for the camp.  But once football season starts, you make up for this when you have to start running them to doctors appointments to mend broken bones and torn shoulders.

You get used to eating on the run trying to make everybody’s games and concerts.  You spend more money trying to feed the family at the concession stands because nobody’s home to eat.  At times, it’s even a whole lot of fun.  I just think you all should know, though.  Enjoy the few hours of peace and quiet you have now.  If you still have some little ones at home, spend some good quality time with them.  You’re in for one busy ride.

Neighbours-gotta love 'em!

We have one of those weirdo nighbours, she’s in her 60’s and mad as a hatter. Her and I have had some serious screaming matches over the years. She absolutely hates, and I meant H.A.T.E.S my boys. She’s told them off countless times, because…….they CLIMB on the WALL!! Oh the shock, the horror! Two naughty boys on the WALL. Her favourite zap sign is the good ‘ol middle finger. So she’s forever displaying the business end of her middle finger. Which in turn evokes squeals of laughter from my kids. Major mocking then ensues. And so the battle continues.

One day T kicked his brother’s soccer ball over the wall. So Pete got onto the wall to look around and and get the ball back. The “whack job” as Pete fondly calls her, went completely dilly!! “Oh my god” she wailed, “don’t DO that, my friends and I thought you were a buglar!! Get of my F#$%ing wall!!”  AAh, you gotta love her! Pete just packed up laughing as it was clearly put on hysterics and melodrama for the visiting friends she had over.

Just as a side note, we paid for the wall, we didn’t ask her for a cent, it’s a beautiful stone wall, and it actually belongs to both neighbours, because it’s a boundary wall.

We’ve now realised that she’s throwing sticks and stuff over the wall onto our property. We just return the goods back to their rightful owner. Pete and the boys want to chuck a turd into her pool one day. I think that might be going too far, but the boys are all for it!!

It makes for very interesting living, if we didn’t have her living next to us life would be pretty boring on the neighbour front! I wonder what exciting moments are in store for us as the festive season gets closer. One can but wonder!

“May you never forget what is worth remembering, nor ever remember what is best forgotten.” Irish blessing.

Squalene in the Vaccine for you and your children.

So a vaccine is being developed for the swine fly (H1N1).  Many people are convinced that the H1N1 virus is a pandemic virus that is more aggressive than flu virus’ in the past.  It is true that it seems that a high percentage of folks that come in contact with the virus develop symptoms.  However, one major fact so often overlooked is that the cases still can be considered mild with percentages of far fewer serious complications from this flu than typical winter influenza.  This, my friend, is a mild flu virus that the vast majority of people will recover from completely and rapidly with absolutely no medical intervention.

Why then is there still panic?  There are 190 million government ordered doses of a vaccine to combat this viral “bacon.” So the modus operandi is the same.  A virus hits the population and a vaccine is ordered to take care of it.  What do we know about this vaccine?  We know that it is being developed very rapidly leaving very little chance to effectively test for safety or really even efficacy.  Although it may appear to be beneficial to push this vaccine through quickly in order to save people the discomfort of an essentially non deadly flu, but what about the long term consequences of an untested vaccine? The limited time for development also means that the actual virus for the vaccine may not be produced in adequate quantities.  This can lead the manufacturers to add something to the mix that guarantees that you will have a heightened immune response even if the level of virus injected is very small.  In other words they are stretching the short supply. This is what is happening with the H1N1 vaccine.

Again this seems ok as you would most likely want the heightened immune response effect if you are going to receive the vaccine.  Let’s consider what this immune response boosting “stuff” is.  In the, past things like mercury and aluminum have been commonly used, but those toxins are yesterday’s news.  For the “pig virus” we need something new; a hip adjuvant if you will.  That new adjuvant is squalene, an oil that is synthetically produced. As a matter of fact the WHO is now recommending this adjuvant as stated on a July 13 briefing on the swine flu pandemic:  “In view of the anticipated limited vaccine availability at global level and the potential need to protect against “drifted” strains of virus, SAGE recommended that promoting production and use of vaccines such as those that are formulated with oil-in-water adjuvants and live attenuated influenza vaccines was important.”

Why the big deal?  It is good to note there are no approved vaccines in the US that contain the additive squalene.  Squalene itself is fine.  In fact it is found in many places throughout the body, especially the nervous system. It is not however, found freely floating in your blood.  Why?  Because when squalene is injected directly into the bloodstream (i.e., vaccine) the body sees it as a toxin and attacks it.  This can be a problem for you and a bonus for vaccine makers, as your immune system builds antibodies to this foreign substance in the blood. Good for vaccine companies as your immune system is stimulated; bad for you because now those antibodies turn and attack squalene wherever they are found naturally occurring in your nervous system.  This information was obtained after the discovery of squalene in the experimental anthrax vaccine used in Gulf War Veterans.  Although the DOD first would not admit that squalene was a component of the vaccine there were to facts to show otherwise.  First the FDA found squalene in some tested samples of the vaccine and second an anti-squalene antibody test was developed for patients suffering Gulf War Syndrome (GWS) and a clear link was made between those with GWS and antisqualene antibodies.  A study from Tulane university in 2000 that was published in the journal of Experimental Molecular Pathology made it very clear: “ … the substantial majority (95%) of overtly ill deployed GWS patients had antibodies to squalene. All (100%) GWS patients immunized for service in Desert Shield/Desert Storm who did not deploy, but had the same signs and symptoms as those who did deploy, had antibodies to squalene. In contrast, none (0%) of the deployed Persian Gulf veterans not showing signs and symptoms of GWS have antibodies to squalene. Neither patients with idiopathic autoimmune disease nor healthy controls had detectable serum antibodies to squalene. The majority of symptomatic GWS patients had serum antibodies to squalene.”

This would be the first approved in the US vaccine to contain squalene which failed.  It is unfortunate that it was used on soldiers.  The question now becomes why are we doing this and what long term effects will we see from people having toxins like squalene injected.  These questions will bear answers later and with 190 million doses already ordered in the US alone those answers will be repeated over and over and over again.

Stealing your girlfriend's password (guide)

A Canadian in the USA

I have never really thought of myself as a big Canuck, though I’ve lived here all my life. In fact, perhaps I’ve been delusional, but I have always thought that if the right opportunity presented itself, I’d jump ship. I’d pack my things, leave my double double, take my chances with nonexistent health care and move to one of the less scary states in the great U.S of A. In fact there are some states I have even found myself daydreaming about. Alabama sounds lovely, Florida sunny, Southern Carolina, whoot! Texas and Arizona are obviously sizzlin’ and California, well what’s not to like? But this past week as I visited Ohio for a conference that turned into a lovely family vacay at a waterpark called Fort Rapids in Columbus, I made so many Canadian faux pas that it’s become clear to me my ship has sailed. On my first day in Ohio, clearly exhausted by the six hour drive and determined not to sound like a silly Canadian I refrained from ordering a double double only to hand the cashier at a coffee shop loonies and toonies in exchange for breakfast and a coffee. The look on her face was priceless. She couldn’t have been more stunned if I’d handed her arcade tokens from Fort Rapids. Anyways, that small gaffe under my belt I proceeded to embarrass Canadians even further during my few days outside the country. During a mandatory stop at a United States McDonald’s I asked for two grilled cheese happy meals. When our cheeseburgers arrived my kids were more than a bit dismayed and I attempted to return them realizing midway through my sentence: “Don’t you have grilled cheese here?” that my Canadian was showing. Oops! I was only the tiniest bit offended by the finger-pointing and chuckling that followed. If that was all that I had done during the week I could laugh but truly the mistakes only seemed to compound themselves until we finally set foot back on Canadian soil. Thankfully thoughtful husband reminded me at Arby’s in Detroit there would be no Great Canadian on the menu here, so please don’t order one. So au revoir dear U.S of A. I love you dearly but will not be moving any time soon. To be quite honest I’ve never really taken a liking to the odd confection you call iced tea. Now fetch me a double double, eh?

The Early Years: Woodland Indians? Or Elves?

This week, I reached into the pile of ancient schoolwork (generously supplied by my parents) and found this little article about the “Woodland Indians” of central New York:

No doubt this is due to my decades-long immersion in “The Lord of the Rings” and similar material, but when I read this, I don’t picture Native Americans; I picture elves.  But if elves lived in the woodlands of the Central New York region of “Amarica”, I never saw them.  Perhaps I wasn’t looking in the right spot.

Don’t forget to vote for the September scene of the month!  Will we keep going with excerpts from The Wolf? We’ll find out soon!

James and the Giant Peach: first few chapters

My kid just turned 6 and is getting just mature enough for me to read him a chapter book without pictures on every page. I was worried that he wouldn’t settle for having no external visual stimuli. So I chose a few favorite books my husband and I kept from our childhoods, and he choose James and the Giant Peach. Having never read it myself, I found myself interested as well. We have only read the first few (short) chapters, but I find I really love reading out loud to him and look forward to it on most nights.

I was struck that the book opens with James’s parents dying. But even more interesting is the manner in which they apparently died: being eaten by a rhinocerous.

I wonder if the death of the parents is a literary/plot device, for that is how James come to live with his awful aunts, and what immediately endears him to the reader. But by having them die in such an unbelievable way, does it make it more “pretend,” like the rest of the story, and therefore less frightening to young readers/listeners?

It seems like children’s books written today are more reluctant to involve such elements in the plot. Maybe that’s OK in some ways. But maybe in other ways, it helps children deal with difficult subjects.
